Surviving NYC's heat đŸ„” - Activities, packing list & a vital travel tip

+ The BEST way to get bar & restaurant recommendations from locals

Hello,

Our strongest “online presence” for Better Together Here is right in this newsletter. Social media drains us, which is why our posting cadence there is sporadic.

What we crave is real conversations. So, please reply to this email with any questions, topic ideas, or feedback you may have for the newsletter and/or podcast.

We will reply, always. đŸ«Ą

And now

In this week’s newsletter:

đŸŽ« Events We Love This Week: July 15-22 - Movies with an unbeatable view & free rock climbing (or bouldering) at gyms across NYC

🍾 You’ll Have to Check It Out - A bartender’s recommendation that exceeded expectations

đŸ„” Surviving NYC’s Heat - You know we’ll cover ice cream spots, but that’s only the beginning

On we go. 👇

Events We Love This Week: July 15-22, 2026

In the city this week? Here are some fun events we’re keeping an eye on.

Free Climbing for Global Climbing Day - Saturday, July 18

Woman Gay GIF by Alayna Joy

Few activities incorporate full-body exercise, mental work, and often getting your ass absolutely kicked by a wall. Luckily, bouldering and rock climbing have you covered.

Whether you’re an avid climber or are brand new, you can climb for free this Saturday, July 18, part of Global Climbing Day.

The North Face is partnering with Movement Gym to offer free climbing and gear rental, one day only. With multiple locations across the city (and the United States), it’s a great way to beat the heat, for free!

Movies with a View at Brooklyn Bridge Park - Thursdays, Now through September

Originally launched in 2000, Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Movies With a View has welcomed over half a million moviegoers.

This summer you can take in movies showcased on a giant screen, with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop. Showings, all from 6-11 pm, include:

  • Bend It Like Beckham (July 16)

  • The Talented Mr. Ripley (July 23)

  • Clueless (July 30)

  • Jurassic Park (August 6)

  • and many more!

It’s free, but showing up early is highly encouraged.

New York Know How - Ask Your Bartender/Server

Happy Hour Dog GIF

In the age of AI, social media fads, and sketchy influencers, knowing where to eat or drink in the city can be tricky.

While we try to steer you toward great options (which you can find in categorized Google Maps lists), there’s one route we often follow, and think you should too.. It’s simple. —

Toward the end of your time at a bar or restaurant, ask your bartender/server where they like to eat or drink nearby. That way you get an authentic, local recommendation that is almost always a hit.

Like we did with BELTANE.

You’ll Have to Check It Out - BELTANE

Dill pickle cocktail + salt & vinegar cocktail (both delicious)

During a recent post-World Cup viewing evening out with a buddy, we stumbled upon a phenomenal happy hour at Hole in the Wall Flatiron (also recommend).

Wanting another drink before ending the night, we scoured Google Maps for nearby spots, but nothing struck our fancy.

So, we asked our server where she liked to drink.

“Ohhhh, you’ve gotta try BELTANE. Even my coworker who never has anything positive to say absolutely loved that spot.”

Lagavulin & Coke plus self-serve water (the best)

Anddddd the ask your server for a recommendation game won AGAIN.

BELTANE struck the perfect blend of cocktail bar meets neighborhood bar meets casual energy.

Friendly staff, water on tap we could grab ourselves (always a plus), and cocktails that punched well above their price point (around $17).

Lagavulin + Coke? Who would have thought!
