+ Sprint (literally) to win free rent & last chance for beachside fireworks this summer
Hi again,
I recently finished The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York, and let me say that feels like the most adult thing I’ve ever done. 😅
If you want to understand recent New York City history, today’s political climate, and why we must hold those in power accountable, give it a read.
In this week’s newsletter:
🎫 Events We Love This Week: August 26 - September 2 - Coney Island’s final nighttime fireworks display & a 100-meter sprint for free rent
🚃 You’ll Have to Check It Out - An elevated railroad turned green space

In the city this week? Here are some fun events we’re keeping an eye on.
Coney Island Fireworks- Last Chance, August 28
For no reason other than nostalgic childhood memories, fireworks = summer.
This Friday, August 28, is your last chance to catch the free Coney Island fireworks show, starting at 9:45 pm.
So grab a Nathan’s hot dog, Mermaid Pilsner, and cuddle your summer fling during the summer’s final fireworks show. 🎇
Who Runs NYC? - August 29 @ Noon
New Yorkers will do damn near anything for a chance at a rent reduction. A month of free rent on the line? Protect ya neck. 👀
This Saturday, Nike is giving away $4,000 in free rent to winners of a series of 100m sprint races. Get the details here.
And if registration is full, consider spectating to see the NYC drive and determination on its best display.. When fighting for free rent money.

You’ll Have to Check It Out - High Line
In 1933, the first trains ran on what was called the West Side Elevated Line. Once becoming fully operational the next year, it was carrying millions of tons of meat, dairy, and produce, in and out of the meatpacking district.
But with the rise of trucking and decline of rail freight, all traffic stopped in the 1980s.
For the next two decades, public opinion on the aging rail line ranged from calls to demolition to pleas for a new use of the green space.
After much public and political disagreement, the line was designated to become a public park. And in 2009, the first section opened to the public!
Today, you can walk the full 1.45-mile-long greenway featuring 500+ species of trees and plants, dozens of art installations, and food vendors throughout.
It’s arguably our favorite experience in the Chelsea neighborhood.
Check out the High Line here, ideally at sunset. 🌅

5 Places to Eat in Times Square That Are Actually Worth It + 1 to Avoid
While Times Square isn’t somewhere you need to spend much time at all, you’ll likely end up there and find yourself craving some food.
Our main recommendation is to explore nearby Hell’s Kitchen, but Times Square has a few food spots worth your time and money!
Oh, and one you HAVE to avoid at all costs… (The movie Elf lied to you)
See the spots by clicking below, including the best hole-in-the-wall Cuban food in Manhattan. 👀
